Plot summary
Hans von Arnim travels to a remote Dutch island to research a story about the carousel of female figures that the sculptor Gregorius Wahl keeps in an old windmill, and he is given a room in the mill's attic. There he meets Elfie, the professor's attractive but ailing daughter, and falls in love with her. When Hans's girlfriend, Liselotte, visits, the carousel upsets her so badly that she faints. Wahl explains that Elfie suffers from a mysterious illness that also took her mother's life, and that Dr. Loren Bohlem, the physician who lives in the house, watches over her day and night. Women from the area keep disappearing.
