Plot summary
Ben Jones travels from Guyana to London in the late 1970s, carrying a suitcase and money his grandmother gave him. At Heathrow, immigration officials find his explanation for the cash hard to credit and strip-search him, and he makes his way to Brixton looking for an address. A ten-year-old named Devon spots him and offers to find the place if Ben pays him. When Ben shows the boy his wallet, Devon takes off with it, leaving Ben to take a bed at a local hostel, where he has to defend his suitcase from a thief. Dave King, a petty crook involved with Devon's mother Miriam, calms things at her café and lends Ben money.
