Plot summary
Livia Mazzoni is the wife of Carlo, a senior official in the Ministry of the People's Republic. She is in love with Helmut Schultz, a lieutenant in the SS. In March 1945 she leaves Asolo for Venice to meet him, driven by Ugo, a lawyer who admires her and reports on her to her husband. The journey gives her time to go back over the affairs and the illicit deals that pulled her into the circles that gather around the collapsing regime. Venice, in the final months of the war, is full of traffickers, officials and profiteers who thrive in that disarray.

- Tinto Brass said Anna Galiena at first seemed doubtful about accepting the role, then insisted on having it and stubbornly asked to audition. She undressed completely naked at his studio in Isola Farnese, where he had covered the glass door panels with cloth for privacy, and told him her hesitation came from having little pubic hair.
- Brass moved the action from the War of Unification to the end of World War II, turning the lover Remigio into a Nazi lieutenant and Livia into the wife of a high-ranking Fascist official; he explained that he changed the period because he did not want to compete with Visconti's vision.
