Plot summary
Casey Morgan and her friends Kirsten and Jill travel to Costa Rica for her bachelorette party. While swimming near a waterfall, she is bitten by an unknown insect. Already unsure about marrying her fiancé Jared, she returns home carrying guilt from a drunken night with a man she met there, having woken on the beach without her ring. She cannot bring herself to ask Jared to postpone the wedding. The couple lives in separate apartments in the same building, an arrangement to appease Jared's mother, Mrs. Kennedy, their landlord, who disapproves of the match. Red marks spread across Casey's skin, she begins vomiting a thick substance, and her senses grow unusually sharp. She learns she is pregnant and calls a clinic about her worsening condition.
