Plot summary
Alina and Voichita grew up together in a Romanian orphanage and became lovers. Alina left for Germany, where she worked as a barmaid, and now she has come back for Voichita, intending to take her away again. Voichita, however, has settled at an Orthodox convent in Romania and is preparing to take her vows. The priest there agrees, without much enthusiasm, that Alina may stay for a while, though he considers her worldly and difficult. He preaches against what he calls fading faith in Western Europe. Voichita tells Alina of an icon in the altar that grants wishes. Asked about her friend, Voichita reports that Alina comes to church irregularly and avoids confession. The nuns want Alina to confess. Alina seeks a night with Voichita, who says Lent requires caution.

SPOILER
Beyond the Hills was inspired by two novels by Tatiana Niculescu Bran documenting the Tanacu exorcism, in which a young member of a monastery in Moldavia died in 2005 after an exorcism ritual. Cristian Mungiu was moved to make the film after seeing a stage version in New York while promoting 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
