Plot summary
Andy Bowman persuades her sister Laura, a doctor, to travel with her to Burma. Laura's husband and son were murdered, and she is deeply depressed. One night in Rangoon, unable to sleep, she leaves her hotel and is caught up in an anti-government protest, where her passport is stolen. When her tour group leaves the country, Laura cannot go with them. While she waits for a new passport, she meets U Aung Ko, who works as an unofficial tour guide and drives an old car.
