Plot summary
A run of poor releases has left Stanbridge Publishing, the house Lucy Stanbridge inherited from her father, struggling to stay afloat. With her assistant Rachel Spence, she works through the backlist and finds that Harris Shaw, a legendary and famously difficult author, still owes them a book. Rachel warns her against the idea: Harris drinks heavily, has published nothing in fifty years, and his old contract bars revisions or editing while obliging him to promote whatever he writes. He does not return Lucy's calls, so she and Rachel make the trip to his house in Westchester, where he greets them with a shotgun. In New York, Lucy is about to sell the company to Jack Sinclair when Harris hands over an unpublished manuscript.
