Plot summary
Hatchett keeps a backyard kennel of dogs in poor conditions behind the home he shares with Colby and Colby's mother in a small Mississippi town. Colby loves dogs, and he secretly takes food and water to an abandoned house for a female black dog, Hatchett's top breeder, so she can nurse her new pups. When Hatchett learns of the visits, he accuses the boy of stealing the dog and orders him to take the black puppies away, and abandons a fluffy, light-colored mongrel. Colby hides the puppy and raises it over several months. Animal control officers Livingston and Sheldon look into reports of illegal breeding and abuse, and a shaggy stray they cannot catch follows them everywhere.
