Plot summary
Washington's letter to the Continental Congress recommends Benedict Arnold for promotion, citing his march through the Maine wilderness toward Canada and his stand at Valcour Island. At Saratoga, Horatio Gates, now first in command of the Northern Army, orders a retreat; Arnold refuses and leads the army to victory, taking a wound in the leg. Washington brings him to Valley Forge as a ranking major general and then appoints him military governor of Philadelphia, where Arnold faces down the Pennsylvania Militia and Joseph Reed's attempts to intimidate him. There he meets Peggy Shippen, whose father Judge Shippen opposes the match and tells Arnold he must clear his name at a court-martial first.
