Plot summary
Six high school seniors gather at a secluded lake for one final day: Johnny, Zeke, Kitty, Kitty's friend Deb, Kitty's boyfriend Matt and Matt's brother Simon. Mr. Parks, who was a friend of Johnny's grandfather, warns Johnny to take care in the water. Johnny promises the lake respect, but the others will not listen and keep causing disturbances from the boat. Then something unseen starts brushing against them under the surface, and their attempt to row back to shore costs them an oar.

- Director Larry Fessenden shot Beneath over an 18-day period, and he and his crew could only film from small boats, which meant that, in his words, "any kind of company move took forever".
- Larry Fessenden designed the giant man-eating catfish himself, because he wanted it to look like "a real fish and not like an evil creature" rather than a monster.
- Fessenden greatly revised the script during production, removing several flashback scenes in an attempt to "keep the drama within the claustrophobic boat".
