Plot summary
Nina waits tables at a Mexican restaurant in New York owned by Manny, whose brother José works there as a cook. Nina turns up late for a second day and Manny dismisses her. As she leaves she drops a teddy bear; José picks it up and follows her into the subway to give it back. She explains that she is pregnant and has been ill with morning sickness. José suggests a walk around the city, and she agrees. He takes her to a restaurant run by a colleague of Manny to ask about a waitressing job. Over a meal, while they wait to hear back, Nina says she does not plan to go ahead with the pregnancy and is thinking about an abortion, partly because the father wants no part in helping and she is broke.
