Plot summary
In 2100 the empire of Mortemonde has colonized nearly all of Earth and enslaved the peoples there. Every slave must collect 1000 points each month inside Battledream, a virtual reality game in which a player can die for real, and only a score that high buys another month of life. Impenetrable firewalls keep anyone from cheating the codes. Syanna Meridian, a young slave, rejects this condition and chooses to fight for her freedom alongside her devoted friend Alytha Mercuri. One nation, Sablereve, remains free, and its leaders prefer flight to war.
