Plot summary
Earth is desolate and dangerous, and a mysterious species of creatures now inhabits it. The remaining humans have built SkyArk, a settlement high above the surface, and there the population keeps growing while room runs out. Only the wealthy and powerful are permitted to stay, and the poor and orphaned are sent down to the abandoned planet. After a rebellion against the city's corrupt rulers collapses, the children of the rebels are dropped to the ruins, among them Rags, the son of the rebel leader. He takes charge of the other exiles, and to have any hope of getting back to SkyArk they must face the creatures that roam the surface.
