Plot summary
Basil is a sheltered young aristocrat, and his father Frederick holds that a man should know his place in society. Ralph, Basil's older brother, was sent to a derelict family manor in Yorkshire after a transgression with a local girl. Clara Fairfax, the orphaned daughter of a friend of Frederick's, comes to live with the family. While home from Oxford, Basil is rescued by John Mannion, a London merchant, and comes to think of him as a friend. At the family's London house Basil hopes to find Mannion again, but he meets instead Julia Sherwin, the daughter of Mannion's employer. She turns down his pursuit, and shortly before he comes of age and inherits money and property, he marries her in secret.
