Plot summary
Ted Boynton is a salesman from Chicago who lives and works in Barcelona in 1987. His cousin Fred, an officer in the navy, turns up at his door without warning and moves in with him. Fred's assignment is to look after public relations for a fleet of United States ships that will arrive later. Fred and Ted have clashed since they were children. Both men take up with single women in the city, and some Barcelona residents object to what Fred's presence represents. Ted faces possible trouble with his employer, and he grapples with how much physical beauty matters to him.
