Plot summary

Amethea, queen of a barbarian village, is making ready for her wedding to Prince Argan. Soldiers loyal to Lord Arrakur attack the settlement before the ceremony can be held, and Argan and Amethea's younger sister Taramis are taken away as prisoners. Amethea survives the raid, as do her handmaiden Estrild and the warrior Tiniara. The three women set out for Arrakur's city, meaning to free the captives and avenge the village. On the road they come upon a small camp of Arrakur's men, which Amethea and Tiniara attack. Near the city they meet members of an underground movement who will help them get inside the walls but will not fight Arrakur.
