Plot summary
After fleeing financial crimes in the United Kingdom, an Irish financier named Brendan Reilly lives in Macau under the borrowed title Lord Doyle. He moves between luxury hotels and the city's casinos, spending what he has and leaning on the persona of a wealthy man to keep his creditors at a distance. Drink, superstition and the quick thrill of a bet have come to rule his days, and the tables pull at him. The casino staff and the affluent regulars who watch him take him for a gweilo, a white ghost. His debts mount as his funds shrink, and he keeps going back to baccarat. There he meets Dao Ming, a credit broker.
