Plot summary
Morris Buttermaker pitched for the Seattle Mariners until he attacked an umpire and lost his place in professional baseball. He now works as an exterminator and drinks heavily. Liz Whitewood hires him to coach the Bears, a children's team whose players can barely field or hit. In their first game the Bears fail to make an out, and Buttermaker forfeits. The players want to quit, but he talks them into staying and promises to coach them better. Amanda Whurlitzer, the twelve-year-old daughter of an old girlfriend, agrees to pitch after he asks her a couple of times. Kelly Leak, a local troublemaker who hits well, joins too, and the Bears begin winning.

- In 2012, a struggling Los Angeles-area little league took a real donation from a local strip club owner to stay afloat, echoing the film's plot in which the Bears are sponsored by "Bo-Peeps Gentlemen's Club" and forced to wear its logo; unlike in the movie, the real club asked to give anonymously.
