Plot summary
Bonnie Altmyer confesses to the murder of her abusive husband and is sent to prison, leaving her oldest child, Harley Altmyer, to raise his three younger sisters in rural Pennsylvania. He gives up college, and by 1995 he works two jobs to pay the bills and look after his sisters Amber, Misty and Jody. Amber is rebellious, Misty is withdrawn and newly adolescent, and Jody is a pre-teen. Harley speaks with a therapist named Betty about the family's past, and he becomes infatuated with Callie Mercer, a married woman ten years older who lives nearby. Their affair takes a dangerous turn.

- Alex Pettyfer first read for the role of Harley Altmeyer back in 2008, then secured the rights to Tawni O'Dell's novel through his company Upturn Productions. He planned only to produce and act, but after two unnamed directors passed, he directed the film himself.
- Andrew Garfield dropped out of the long-gestating adaptation in 2012 because of scheduling conflicts with The Amazing Spider-Man, and the project was then abandoned when its financing fell through.
- Adrian Lyne had envisioned a big-budget studio version leaning into the erotic elements he is known for, but Alex Pettyfer dropped the more sexual material from Lyne's script and went darker, focusing on family drama and trauma.
- In 2011, Andrew Garfield, Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden were reported to be attached to star in Adrian Lyne's version, from a script Lyne co-wrote with novelist Tawni O'Dell.
