Plot summary
Polly Parrish sells at Merlin's, a department store in New York City, and learns that her seasonal job ends after the holidays. On her way to lunch she spots a woman setting a baby down on the orphanage steps. Fearing the child might roll off, she picks it up, and the staff take the sight of her holding it as proof of motherhood. She says otherwise and leaves the baby with them, but gives her name and her employer. The director of the orphanage tells David Merlin, the owner's son, about Polly's supposed situation and asks for the store's help. David arranges a permanent position for her with a raise. Her pleasure at the news turns to confusion when the attendants bring the baby to where she lives, saying she must raise it to keep the post.
