Plot summary
At nineteen Ben Lawson worked as a farm hand for Hal and Jessica Hancock in Iowa, and he and their eighteen-year-old daughter Annie fell for each other. After the harvest they eloped, with Ben holding a lead on a Wall Street job in New York City. When Hal learned of the wedding, he persuaded them to annul it so Annie could attend college, and Ben went east alone. Fifteen years pass without contact between them. Annie now runs the family farm, is finishing her doctorate in agricultural sciences, and is engaged to Joe, a farm hand. Ben is a wealthy New York investment broker engaged to interior designer Giovanna Jorgensen. Preparing Ben's prenup, his lawyer Tony McAllister finds the annulment was never finalized, so Annie travels to New York to ask a judge for a divorce.
