Plot summary
Aurore Gagnon grows up in Sainte-Philomène de Fortierville, the second daughter of Marie-Anne Caron and Télésphore Gagnon, and spends her first years in a happy family. In the fall of 1917 Marie-Anne Caron develops tuberculosis and is taken to a hospital. Télésphore has fallen in love with his cousin's widow, Marie-Anne Houde, and after his wife dies he marries her. The children come under Marie-Anne Houde's care, and Aurore is punished and beaten while neighbors who hear her screams look away. The priest, Father Leduc, and the village justice of the peace, Oréus Mailhot, hear reports of the girl's injuries, but fear of Télésphore keeps the community from acting.
