Plot summary
Ed Wallis is a high school student getting used to a new town, a newly single mother and an assignment to interview someone older than himself. He picks his neighbor, Ashby Holt, and the two become friends. Passports in Ashby's name and cupboards full of weapons point to a past Ashby does not describe: he is a retired CIA assassin with only a few months left to live, trying to make his peace with his life and with God. Ed, meanwhile, wants a place on the football team and the attention of a brainy classmate, Eloise.
