Plot summary
Arthfael is a young Celtic warrior in dark ages Britain, where the druid Aberthol keeps the aging king under his control and sends warriors to their deaths in the war with the Saxons. Arthfael doubts the druid's motives and speaks against him after the Celts' latest defeat, and for that he is banished. He shields a Christian Celt woman from the druid's men, and a sword comes into his hands that shows him visions. He rides out to find Myrrdin, a hermit wizard he saved years ago when they were boys. Myrrdin refuses him at first, until he sees the sword, and then agrees to stand with him against Aberthol.
