Plot summary
A political prisoner on a mining colony, Kye Cortland loses a foot getting out and receives a cybernetic replacement. General Hatch brings him into the rebellion against General Lang: Cortland's father, a man the rebellion needs, is to be executed on the anniversary of Lang's victory. An accomplished pilot, Cortland agrees to hijack the scientific vessel Arrowhead, pull its data and hand it over. He wakes early from suspended animation and taps the ship's data banks; a flare then damages the vessel and forces out the escape pods. Cortland takes a shuttle to a desert moon, where the ship's AI, RE3F, warns him of toxic air but gives nothing more without a valid login. Exploring, he finds the corpse of Norman Oleander, the vessel's security chief, and a pod that still holds the biologist Tarren Hollis.
