Plot summary
Chris Holland, eleven years old, is alone in the house after school when three intruders get in. He takes a .22 rifle and shoots two of them; the third gets away. The killing leaves him shaken, and he has trouble at home and at school. His father, Bobby Lee, stays distant and assumes a boy in that position should feel like a hero rather than suffer. Friends of the two dead men want revenge. The story is drawn from real events in Spartanburg County in March 1988, when William Todd Knight, an eleven-year-old, shot and killed two intruders, Danny Ray Abernathy and Broadus Petty.
