Plot summary
Samuel Mullins, a dollmaker, and his wife Esther lose their seven-year-old daughter Annabelle, known as Bee, when she steps in front of a car. Twelve years later the couple opens the house to Sister Charlotte and six girls whose orphanage has closed, among them Janice, who walks with crutches after polio, and her friend Linda. Samuel tells the girls that Bee's bedroom is locked and that Esther's room is off limits. Woken by a noise, Janice finds a note reading "Find me" and slips into the bedroom, which has come unlocked. A key opens the closet inside, and there sits a porcelain doll. A demon is released with it and begins to frighten the girls in the house.

- David F. Sandberg said Stephanie Sigman, who plays Sister Charlotte, was a little freaked out by the Annabelle doll and asked for the same blessing a priest had performed on the set of The Conjuring 2.
- David F. Sandberg softened Annabelle's features so she looked more like a child's toy, and because the doll was immobile he had to use other objects, such as a sheet, to make her appear to move.
- Annabelle: Creation pushed The Conjuring franchise past the $1 billion mark, making it only the third horror series ever to cross that threshold, after the Alien franchise and the Resident Evil series.
- Talitha Bateman was among the actresses James Wan considered for the role of Janet in The Conjuring 2, a part that ultimately went to Madison Wolfe.
- Anthony LaPaglia agreed to star in the film after his 14-year-old daughter overheard him talking about the movie on the phone and reacted enthusiastically to her father taking the role.
- The film set the biggest launch for a horror movie of all time in Sweden, Poland, Portugal, India, Malaysia ($2.2 million), the UAE ($1.1 million) and Vietnam, and the franchise's best opening weekend in 26 markets.
