Biography

Alvin Childress was an American actor best known for playing a cab driver in a 1950s sitcom. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, he studied sociology at Rust College and took up theater outside his classes, having entered school planning to be a doctor. In New York he acted with the Lafayette Players and worked in the Federal Theater Project, the American Negro Theater and race films such as Keep Punching (1939). His biggest stage part was Noah in Anna Lucasta, a hit that reached 957 performances, and he played Noah again in the 1958 film. Casting for the CBS comedy Amos 'n' Andy gave him Amos Jones, the sensible, diligent cab driver, and the show lasted two seasons. Typecasting limited him but he appeared on Perry Mason, Sanford and Son, Good Times and The Jeffersons and in films such as The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) and The Main Event (1979). He died in 1986.
