Plot summary
Anna is the wife of Alexei Karenin, a rich Russian nobleman who is twenty years older than she is. Her marriage brings her no happiness; her son, Seriozha, is the center of her life. She leaves for Moscow to see her brother, and at a ball there she meets Count Alexei Vronsky. The count is taken with her at once. He travels to St. Petersburg after her, and he makes his interest plain. Anna is drawn to the count, though she remains Karenin's wife. In the circles of the Russian nobility, an affair would ruin a woman's name. Vronsky will not step back from his pursuit.
