Plot summary

Lucy, a teenager, asks her mother Sarah for permission to go on a camping trip while the two of them drive. Sarah refuses, and Lucy steps out of the car into the path of an oncoming vehicle. In the same town, Tess, who has spent years dealing with what appears to be mental instability, moves with her mother Jessica into a new house for a fresh start. Skateboarding near the roadside cross that marks where Lucy was struck, Tess is pushed into the dirt by something unseen and cannot leave. Phenomena follow her home, and she takes them for hallucinations. She wanders into Sarah's bookstore and says something only Lucy could know.
