Plot summary
Two nurses from Nottingham, Jane and Cathy, are on a cycling holiday in rural France. At a busy restaurant, Cathy notices a man drinking alone; he later passes them on a scooter and appears again in a small village. Tired of cycling, Cathy decides to sunbathe in a wooded area, and after an argument about their itinerary Jane continues without her. At a roadside cafe, the owner tells Jane the area is unsafe for a woman on her own. Cathy, uneasy and sensing she is watched, finds her bicycle wheel destroyed. When Jane goes back, Cathy has disappeared, leaving only her camera in the grass. Paul, the man from the restaurant, offers to ride her to the village.

- Writer Brian Clemens said the filmmakers insisted that all the action take place in broad daylight, because darkness is frightening in itself but it would be nice to frighten people in daylight; he reportedly wrote the script in two days.
- Brian Clemens said his business partner Albert Fennell told him he should have directed the film, and that he thought perhaps he should have; Clemens eventually turned director with Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter.
- Bernard Delfont called And Soon the Darkness, Hoffman and The Man Who Haunted Himself "the real dodos belly-flopping out of Elstree", and the three films got Bryan Forbes's EMI regime off to a poor start it never really recovered from.
- And Soon the Darkness was the first film made under Bryan Forbes at EMI Elstree to be released; Hoffman was produced first but came out later.
