Plot summary
Shuhei Hirayama is a widower in 1962 Tokyo who once commanded a ship in the Japanese navy and now manages a factory. His older son Koichi is married and lives with his wife Akiko; Michiko, 24, keeps house for her father, and Kazuo, 21, still lives at home. Hirayama's middle-school classmates Kawai and Horie join him for reunions at a restaurant, and their old teacher Sakuma, nicknamed the Gourd, comes along. When Kawai and Hirayama take the drunk Sakuma home, they find him scraping a living from a noodle stall, and meet his middle-aged daughter Tamako, who stayed at home to care for him and never married. Sakuma blames himself for that. The thought unsettles Hirayama, who begins to consider whether Michiko should be free to marry.
