Plot summary
Niki Junpei arrives in a rural coastal village to hunt tiger beetles and other insects. He misses the last bus to the city, and the locals offer him a night's lodging. They lead him down a rope ladder into a hut at the base of a dune, where a young widow lives by herself. Her husband and daughter died in a sandstorm about a year earlier, and sand keeps sliding down onto the house; each day she digs it into buckets that the villagers haul up from above. In the morning the rope ladder has been pulled up, and the steep walls of sand offer no grip.

- Woman in the Dunes was an independent joint production, made outside the studio system: the Japanese Art Theater Guild, a group of young filmmakers, aimed to create political–aesthetical films in opposition to 1960s studio productions they saw as commercial and unartistic.
- The film was shot on location at the Hamaoka sand dunes in Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture — not at the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori Prefecture, which many English-language sources wrongly claim.
