Plot summary
Jake Nyman, a Los Angeles psychiatrist, sets out on a pleasure trip through the desert with a rule of his own: every decision is settled by the flip of a coin. Sandra Thomas, driving alone, is run off the road by another motorist, Santini, and her car quits on her. Jake stops and offers her a lift. She is headed for Pearblossom to meet her sister Alice, but the trip stalls when Jake's car runs out of gas. At a rest stop the two grow close, and Santini turns up again, punching Sandra during a drunken row. Jake offers Sandra a choice settled by a coin: he will either kill Santini or make certain he never hurts her again.
