Plot summary
In 1944, before the American invasion of the Philippines, a Catalina flying boat lands a hand-picked Marine amphibious reconnaissance team. Every man brings a specialty except the radio operator, James Grenier, an air crew radioman with six months in the Corps, set ashore when the team's own operator is found medically unfit. He carries the sick man's radio and camouflage jacket on his first ground combat mission, and his inexperience angers First Sergeant Steve Corey and the other scouts. Gunnery Sergeant Ernest Wartell, his only friend in the patrol, mediates between them. Guided by Amado, the team moves inland to reach an intelligence agent who holds information for the fleet.
