Plot summary
Alex Cross, a Washington, D.C. detective who works as a forensic psychologist and writes true crime books, leaves the police force after a sting operation goes wrong and his partner, Tracie Fisher, is killed. When a US senator's daughter, Megan Rose, is abducted from her private school by Gary Soneji, Secret Service agent Jezzie Flannigan is blamed for the security failure that let him reach the girl, and she and Cross join forces to find the child. Soneji calls Cross and leaves one of Megan's sneakers in his mailbox; Cross recognizes that the crime is modeled on the 1932 Lindbergh kidnapping, a case Soneji means to make his name with.
