Plot summary
On November 22, 1963, after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson enters the White House. His wife, Lady Bird, advises him. He declares that the Civil Rights Act, drafted while Kennedy was in office, must pass. The bill would guarantee equal rights for all races, including voting, education and access to public facilities. Martin Luther King Jr. urges him to accept no amendment that would weaken it. Senator Richard Russell Jr. of Georgia and other Southern Democrats resist the bill and threaten to leave the party if it passes. Republicans and Democrats who are undecided offer amendments opposed by liberals and by Civil Rights activists. Johnson also wants to declare a War on Poverty.
