Plot summary
A plane carrying boys home from military school comes down beside an uninhabited jungle island. Captain Benson, the pilot, is the only adult to come through alive, and he is hurt and confused. Simon finds a river and brings the others to drink. On the beach, an overweight cadet nicknamed Piggy finds a conch shell. The boys agree that whoever holds it has the right to speak. Cadet Colonel Ralph, the senior boy, calls a meeting about survival, and a vote makes him the leader rather than Jack. The boys light a fire using Piggy's glasses to signal passing craft.

- Two weeks into filming, Hurricane Gilbert disrupted production, blowing leaves off the trees. To match what had already been shot, a storm was written into the script and the crew brought in wind generators to create the appearance of a storm.
- The child actors were too short to walk through long grass for a sequence shot on the Hamakua Coast, so taller body doubles were used instead; a casting call found them all within forty-eight hours.
- Producer Lewis M. Allen's wife, Jay Presson Allen, wrote the screenplay, her last film work before her death in 2006, but was reportedly dissatisfied with the final product and had her name replaced with the pseudonym Sara Schiff.
- The film score borrows heavily from Igor Stravinsky's classical composition Le Sacre du Printemps, known in English as The Rite of Spring.
