Plot summary
Ethan O'Fallon and his sister Hallie are the children of Catherine and Michael, who are divorced. Their grandmother Lillian Brooks, Catherine's mother, is drawn into what the children plan. The two of them decide that a reunited family is the gift they want for Christmas. Hallie meets Santa Claus and makes her Christmas wish: her mother and father back together. From there the siblings work on a scheme of their own, with help from Stephanie, a friend Ethan has made. They treat Tony Boer, whose attention has turned to Catherine, as the main person in their way. Ethan is also working out his own feelings about Stephanie.

- Thom Eberhardt was replaced by director-producer Robert Lieberman after Paramount's new chairman, Brandon Tartikoff, rushed the film into production to reach a 1991 holiday opening rather than 1992; Eberhardt departed amicably because of the short shooting schedule.
- Gail Parent and Neal Israel were the original co-writers of Thom Eberhardt's script, but after Richard Kramer rewrote it, neither of their names appeared in the credits.
- All I Want for Christmas used 80,000 pounds of special-effects snow, a number noted by Washington Post critic Desson Howe in his review of the film's Manhattan yuletide setting.
