Plot summary
Sam Rossi rode bulls until his injuries ended that career; he now runs a motel in a small town, unable to lift his right arm and walking with a limp. He reads in the paper that three men were shot at Lou's bar, among them Tom Barrett. Tom's widow Bernadette asks Sam to come by during a gathering for her husband, and later wakes him in the middle of the night; he lays down a photograph of a woman and a young girl. A young man named Elwood checks in, extends his stay, and praises Sam as a famous bull rider, telling him his own father was a fan and is now dead. Sam tells Elwood about his health and why he shakes. Elwood asks whether Sam has a girlfriend, and Sam says he does.
