Plot summary
Sister Agnes is a young novice at a Roman Catholic convent in Montreal. The other nuns hear her screaming and find her bleeding, with a dead infant in a basket that Mother Superior Miriam Ruth discovers in the room. Agnes is charged with manslaughter. The court assigns psychiatrist Martha Livingston to establish whether Agnes is competent to be tried, and Agnes tells her she cannot recall being pregnant or giving birth and seems to have no idea how a child is conceived. Mother Miriam describes Agnes as an innocent kept at home by her mother, unaware of the world, and wants her kept that way. Livingston's inquiries meet resistance from the convent, the church and her own superiors.
