Plot summary
Karen has just married for the third time, and her daughter Greta, seventeen and rebellious, has been pushed aside at home. Greta is sent to spend the summer with her maternal grandparents, Katherine and Joseph, in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, and neither she nor the couple is pleased about the arrangement. She tells them she has decided to end her own life during the summer, and she writes down ways of doing it. Her manner wins her work waiting tables at a local seafood restaurant, where she becomes interested in Julie, a short-order cook. Julie says he once stole cars and was held in a juvenile correctional facility, and that draws her to him; he urges her not to abandon her life.
