Plot summary

Alice waits tables in a small Indiana town, and on a dinner date her boyfriend Scott, a state trooper, is about to propose when a repairman's nail gun goes off and puts a nail in her head. The doctors refuse to operate because she has no health insurance, and they warn that the nail will change her: fits of rage, no sexual inhibition, occasional Portuguese. Scott backs away from the engagement. Her parents raise $600, and Aunt Rita, the town vet, tries an operation that fails. Local pastor Reverend Norm, who has an untreated condition of his own, keeps her company, and so does Keyshawn. Seeing Congressman Howard Birdwell on television invite constituents to bring him their problems, Alice sets out for Washington with the two of them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Accidental Love (2015)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Production was shut down frequently, as many as 14 times, for nonpayment of the cast and crew, leading to walk-outs by stars Biel and Gyllenhaal as well as several crew members.
  • In a dispute over control of the film, Wick and Fisher withheld the negatives and postponed the crucial sequence in which Biel's character is injured with a nail gun until the final day; a union then pulled support with two days left, so the scene was never shot.
  • With the film set to be released, Russell negotiated with the Directors Guild of America to remove his name; he is credited as director and co-writer under the name "Stephen Greene", an alternative to the former official pseudonym Alan Smithee.
  • After a home video release by Mongrel Media in Canada, A.A. Dowd of The A.V. Club accused the company of quoting his review out of context to make a negative notice look positive; Mongrel issued an apology and said it would remove the quote from further prints.
