Plot summary
Subir Kumar is a professional singer whose career is climbing toward the top of the Indian pop charts. He has no intention of marrying, but on a visit to his aunt Durga Mausi he hears Uma, a religious village girl, sing and is enchanted by her voice. He falls in love with her and marries her, taking her back to Mumbai. There he declares that he will not sing without Uma again, and he encourages her to perform on her own. Uma sings for herself rather than for an audience. As her popularity grows and his own career falters, his pride is wounded.

- Two origins are claimed for the film: Aalif Surti says it draws on the stormy marriage of sitarist Ravi Sankar and surbahar player Annapurna Devi, while author Raju Bharatan says Hrishikesh Mukherjee based the story on singer Kishore Kumar and his first wife, Ruma Guha Thakurta.
- Manhar Udhas recorded the demo of the song "Loote Koi Man Ka Nagar", and Mukesh, who was supposed to sing it, refused the song, saying the demo was good and Udhas should be given the chance.
- Singer Anuradha Paudwal began her music career with Abhimaan, singing a Sanskrit verse for Jaya Bhaduri in the film.
- The film was a turning point for Bindu, who played a sympathetic character for the first time after being known for vamps and cabaret dancers, such as in Amitabh Bachchan's star-making hit Zanjeer.
