Plot summary

Karan, a mechanic in the countryside, takes a six-month job in Dubai that his friend Rahim finds for him, to earn enough for his daughter Suman's marriage. He leaves Suman with Kishan, an old friend from the village whose studies Karan once paid for and who is now a wealthy factory owner in a big city. Kishan's son Prem befriends Suman and tells her he believes a boy and a girl can simply be friends. Kishan's business partner Ranjeet hopes to marry his daughter Seema to Prem and so control the estate. At a party given by Seema, Ranjeet's nephew Jeevan humiliates Suman and Prem and accuses them of pretending to be only friends. Suman falls in love with Prem.

  • Shabina Dutt failed her screen test for the female lead and suggested Salman Khan, with whom she had made an ad film; Khan was unenthusiastic about the soft film and Barjatya disliked his first audition, yet Barjatya convinced him to star.
  • Faraaz Khan, son of actor Yusuf Khan, was almost finalised as Prem but was replaced at the last minute because of health issues; Vindu Dara Singh and Deepak Tijori had also auditioned for the role.
  • Bhagyashree turned down the film to pursue higher studies, so Sooraj Barjatya rewrote parts of the script before she agreed to play Salman Khan's love interest.
  • Maine Pyar Kiya was made on a budget of around ₹1 crore and earned a profit of over ₹20 crore by 1990, saving Rajshri Productions from closing down.
  • Nutan, the veteran actress and mother of Mohnish Bahl, was unhappy that her son was cast as the villain rather than in other roles; the makers assured her the character would be long remembered.
  • Sooraj Barjatya copied Tom Cruise's Top Gun jacket for Salman Khan, giving him a jacket with patches of American Army, Navy and Air Force insignia and other defence badges.
  • Maine Pyar Kiya became a cult favourite for its songs, dialogues and the chemistry between Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, and it established the careers of supporting actors Mohnish Bahl and Laxmikant Berde.
