Plot summary
David leaves a monastery and settles into life as a public school English teacher in the New York City area, driving into the city on his time off to meet his oldest friend from Schenectady, Alan, at a gay bar. One night Mark, a businessman, picks David to dance with, and the two spend the night together. What began as a single night continues: David asks to see Mark again, and before long they are a monogamous couple, with David moving into Mark's place. Mark does not want their relationship modeled on a heterosexual marriage; he would rather both of them stay free to sleep with other men. Mark will not say that he loves David, and David keeps pressing for a romantic commitment.
