Plot summary
Ruth Williams, who works in a London office, meets Seretse Khama, a law student in line to rule the Bamangwato people in the Bechuanaland Protectorate. They choose each other, and both families object. Seretse's uncle, who governs as Regent, wants him to end the marriage and take a Bamangwato princess instead. The British government, weighing its ties to South Africa, tries to stop the match, and South West Africa and Rhodesia press the same demand. South Africa's National Party is outlawing marriages of this kind and fears the couple will stir unrest. Seretse refuses to give Ruth up, and the fight over their union continues.
