Plot summary

An American intelligence squad, picked for its high IQs, is posted to an empty chateau near the German lines in the Ardennes in December 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge opens. Losses on an earlier patrol have left six men: Sgt. Knott, Miller, Avakian, Shutzer, Wilkins and Mundy. On the way they find the frozen bodies of a German and an American locked in a standing embrace. German troops hold a position nearby. The Germans leave calling cards and one evening start a snowball fight, then propose a Christmas truce. Shutzer's Yiddish is enough to talk with them, and the Germans prove to be teenage soldiers under an aging officer who have come through the Eastern Front. They want to surrender, but ask the Americans to make it look like a capture in combat so their families are spared.
