Plot summary
Angela Delvecchio is a sophomore at Santa Mira High School who holds herself to the school's motto of being the best. She earns strong grades, goes to Mass, and aims for the Larks, the yearbook staff and the cheerleading squad. The group she longs to join is the wealthy, popular crowd around Stacy Lockwood, the school's most admired girl. Angela and Stacy both make it into the Larks, and Angela raises money so she can join the ski trip with Stacy and her friends. Stacy turns her away. Then the cheerleading squad and the yearbook staff both pass Angela over, and she is left ashamed and certain she has failed.

- Bernadette Protti lured Kirsten Costas with a phony invitation to a dinner for the Bob-o-Links, a sorority-like group at their school, planning to befriend her at a party. Costas got angry when she was told there was no dinner for the new "Bobbies".
- Kirsten Costas was very popular at Miramonte High School, served on the yearbook committee and was a cheerleader. Bernadette Protti, who came from an affluent family, was jealous, was not accepted by the yearbook committee and was not picked for cheerleading.
- Protti stabbed Costas five times with a kitchen knife and fled. Neighbors called an ambulance, but Costas was mortally wounded and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
- It took police almost six months to find Costas's killer. Bernadette Protti passed a lie detector test but her alibi went unverified, and after speaking with an FBI agent she wrote her mother a letter making a full confession.
- Bernadette Protti was sentenced to a maximum of nine years for killing her classmate Kirsten Costas, but was released seven years later on parole.
