Plot summary
Abel and Junon Vuillard live in Roubaix, where she held the family together through difficult years. Their eldest child, Elizabeth, is a playwright married to Claude; their son Paul, sixteen, has a mental illness and takes strong medication. Henri, the middle child, drinks heavily and fights with everyone. Ivan, the youngest, is married to Sylvia, and they have two sons. Simon, a cousin raised alongside Henri and Ivan after his parents died, works in Abel's plant and paints. Junon learns she has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant, so the family gathers at her house at Christmas to be tested. Six years earlier Elizabeth paid off Henri's debts and told him to stay away from her and from their parents' home.
